Do you like the taste of apple pie? But don't like all the work? Here you can have your cake and eat it too! No kidding. Simple to assemble, you spend more time waiting on the baking then the prep and clean up. Delicious and full of spice with the help from a box of spice cake mix that gives this recipe loads of flavor. A Southern Living recipe.
-
Cooking spray
-
4 (14.5-oz.) cans seasoned fried apples, divided
-
1 tsp. apple pie spice
-
1 (15.25-oz.) box spice cake mix (such as Duncan Hines)
-
1/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
-
3/4 cup (6 oz.) unsalted butter, thinly sliced
-
Vanilla ice cream
Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat a 13- x 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Gather ingredients.
Drain 2 of the cans of fried apples; discard liquid. Dump drained apples and 2 remaining undrained cans of fried apples into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle evenly with apple pie spice.
Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over apples and scatter oats evenly over top.
Arrange butter slices over top, covering as much of the surface as possible.
Bake in preheated oven until golden brown on top and bubbly around edges, 50 to 55 minutes.
Let cool slightly, about 10 minutes, and serve warm with ice cream, or let cool completely, about 1 hour 30 minutes, to serve at room temperature.
